It is our heart to get Bibles and good Christian literature into the community, to help people to discover a relationship with Jesus Christ and to encourage and resource Christians in their life’s walk.
It all began in the late 1980s when evangelical Christians from different denominations came together to pray. Out of a desire to share the good news of the Gospel various new things came about, one of which was this bookshop. With the help of Faith Mission, the doors were opened on John Street in 1989. The following year the shop was handed over to a local management committee made up of Christians from different denominations in the area, and Faith Mission generously allowed the shop stock to be paid back over a number of years.
Since then the shop has moved to James Street and then to High Hayes Terrace, and now to The Light House off Dean Street, with different managers and staff from local churches, all volunteers. In 2005, the ministry set up as a charity, Kilkenny Christian Literature Trust, registered in Ireland number 20049706.
Our charity’s main object is “to aid people in understanding the Christian Gospel as revealed in the Bible, primarily by providing a non-denominational open door for the public to access Christian literature founded on Biblical principles.”
Support
Kilkenny Christian Bookshop is under the umbrella of the registered Charity Kilkenny Christian Literature Trust, and none of those running or staffing the shop receive any salary. Many Christian (and non-Christian) bookshops have had to close in recent years, but we have been thankful for all the support we have received:
- Prayer
- Financial giving (we are registered for tax back scheme for all donations of €21 per month or more)
- Custom in the shop!
We welcome support of any kind, and would be happy to hear from you.
Volunteers
Our friendly volunteer staff are always willing to help, and if we don’t have what you want in stock, we have access to a huge range of books which can be obtained in a few days.
